Zoo de Barcelona – Collserola insects

CONSERVATION PROJECT – VIDEO

“Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain.”

Henry David Thoreau

THE

STORY

Insects are one of the most unknown and important inhabitants of nature. Near Barcelona, there is the Collserola Park were Jorge Mederos has been conducting his research about insects for more than 10 years with the support of the Barcelona Zoo. In this video, we will discover the fascinating world of Jorge as he accompanies us to the Collserola forest where insects are waiting to be discovered to tell us story about conservation. Jorge is one of the most singular researchers we’ve met and his research is the result of 10 years of patience, perseverance and dedication.

Jorge comes from Cuba and his passion for insects began when he was a child and a researcher showed him a collection of insects in at the museum. This moment of awe is very clear in his memories and it is the motor of his passion. Now he is an expert in flies, which he describes as fascinating. Maybe for most of us, flies are boring insects but after talking with Jorge we can never see them again with the same eyes. We wanted to tell a little of his story in this short video portrait where he explains his project in the Collserola park funded by the Barcelona Zoo foundation.

He is an adventurer with a vast experience in caves and complicated environments and people from around the world sent him insects for him to identify. He has discovered several new species, and his contribution to science and conservation is humble and important. He has spent the last 10 years studying the Collserola park insects, building his study platforms for that; and we are talking about a 10 m high 100 m long wooden bridge.  His project tells us about the role of insects in the ecosystems and the important to study them for the conservation of the environment.
